Rob Roy Glacier Walk

10km / 6 miles (3.5 hrs)

The Rob Roy Glacier Walk is located within Mount Aspiring National Park an hour away from Wanaka. The track passes through woodland and into a majestic alpine valley that will have you reaching for your camera again and again.

Starting from the Raspberry Creek car park, take a 15 minute walk through the valley to cross the West Matukituki River on a swing bridge, downstream from the Rob Roy Stream junction. After the bridge, the track climbs through a small gorge into beech forest, then into alpine vegetation at the head of the valley, where you’ll catch glimpses of the glacier through breaks in the trees.  After a time the forest drops away and you will want to stop to take in the sight of the hanging glaciers high above you

Take a packed lunch and enjoy it at the viewpoint, as you look right up at the glacier. You return along the same route, however, to extend the walk once you’ve crossed back over the Matukituki river, turn right, to walk up the Matukituki Valley and take I more of the beautiful scenery.

Getting there
