Cape Foulwind Walkway, Westport

5km / 3 miles (1 hr 30 min)

The Cape Foulwind Walkway is located in the Buller District at the top of the West Coast on South Island. The walkway starts at the end of the Cape Foulwind Road and finishes at the Tauranga Bay car park. This is a well marked track along the coastline and over undulating farmland, with an occasional stile over fences.

The start of the walkway is also the site of one of New Zealand’s most accessible seal colonies and although its an all year round colony, those visiting between October and March will be treated to sightings of the huge Bull seals returning to mate, and the pups playing on the beach.

The walk is one-way, and you will need to arrange transport at the track end or return along the same walkway. As the coastal path descends to a small bluff, you will be able to view a small seal colony on the rocks.
