Why Choose a Small Group Tour?

Small Groups, Good Company

Our 16-seater Pure Discoveries vehicles are agile enough to explore roads less-travelled and approach New Zealand’s most beautiful sights – both iconic and hidden gems – from a different angle. We can get off the beaten track just as easily as we can cruise Highway 1.

Our vehicles are also very comfortable, with good legroom, headroom and picture windows so you can see where you’re going, but we don’t want you to experience New Zealand through plate glass, so we take every opportunity we can to get you off the coach!

Discovering New Zealand in a group of no more than 16 is a very special experience. You’ll enjoy good company and find common ground with like-minded travellers with the potential for serendipitous surprises, a lot of laughs and perhaps new friends for life.

Our small group size also means we can dispense with ‘coach tour’ admin like asking you to wear a name badge, and good manners and good humour are more important to us than strict time-keeping.

Great Leaders, Expert Guides

Kiwis are passionate about showing visitors the best of New Zealand so not only are our hand-picked leaders safe drivers in all conditions, but they are also happy personalities, full of knowledge, enthusiasm, insights and practical advice, and they’ll be your friend as well as your driver by the end of the tour.

At various points on our journey we meet up with a local guide who will add their expertise to enhance your experience. Specialists in their field, be it wildlife encounters, eco adventures, Geothermal wonders or Māori heritage and culture, the guides have an infectious passion and incredible knowledge of their subject which ensures YOU get the best out of the experience too.

Flexible Schedules

With a small group we can be more flexible about each day’s timetable, creating opportunities for surprise encounters and time for stops en route. So if someone spots a takahe in the mountains we can stop for a photo; if there’s a new exhibition at a museum we can linger longer and if it’s 90 degrees in the shade we can cool down at the beach before we hit the road again.

We also have the flexibility to combine a small group tour of New Zealand with a tailor-made itinerary, so If you wish to see the North Island at your own pace and join a tour to explore South Island that’s fine by us! Our small group tours range from 10-21 days with 6 different tours to choose from so we’re sure there will be one to suit your requirements.

Getting Up Close and Personal

We believe that travelling in smaller groups means you get a better experience. We don’t miss out the ‘must see’ iconic sights, but we do add in smaller scale, more personal adventures and experiences that simply aren’t possible for a coach tour with 40 or more passengers.

You’ll never forget your first sight across Auckland harbour, or of Aoraki/Mt Cook, but your fondest memories may well be of enjoying breath-taking views of the turquoise lagoons that surround Abel Tasman National Park during a guided walk or enjoying a leisurely lunch and comparing wine tasting notes at a Hawkes bay winery.

Our New Zealand group tour itineraries include a wonderful mix of handpicked  B&B’s, Home and Farmstays, Luxury Lodges and Hotels, made possible by travelling in a small group and ensuring that you have the opportunity to experience some real kiwi hospitality (as well as some unforgettable kiwi breakfasts!). If you’re looking for a New Zealand luxury small group tour, make sure you have a chat to us about your needs and we’ll tailor something especially for you.

We seek out accommodations with amazing views to wake up to, in great locations and with friendly hosts who will add to the enjoyment of your stay with their generosity and knowledge of the area they call home. Sometimes we choose a large city hotel because of its central location, but more often than not, you’ll be enjoying a real home from home experience in a property with real kiwi charm and character.

Guaranteed Departures

All our tour dates are guaranteed departures, whether we travel with two or four passengers, or a full complement of 16, so you can make your international travel plans accordingly, without concerns as to whether your holiday will go ahead.

Responsible Travel

Our Small Group Journeys are unique to us. We have called each itinerary after a native tree or flower, many of which you may encounter while travelling with us.

We work closely with local suppliers who are recognised for their sustainable tourism practices and are assessed under New Zealand’s Qualmark quality assurance scheme under the Enviro Award criteria. Our main transport provider has one of the highest Enviro Awards ratings in the country.

We feel strongly that all our holidays should benefit the local communities, protect the environment by minimising pollution, and respect local traditions, religion and heritage. We tread lightly – low volume, low impact holidays are the best way of preserving New Zealand’s beautiful natural heritage.
