Golf has been played in New Zealand since the late 19th century, and today you’ll just shy of 400 courses across the country. In fact, if you travel 30 miles in any direction in New Zealand, it’s likely that you’ll come across a fantastic course with wide-open fairways and available tee times. Perhaps this is why it’s such a popular destination for golfers!
Golf Courses in New Zealand
Not matter what style of course you enjoy the most, you can rest assured that New Zealand will have one (or ten) to suit your style of play.
Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club can be found on the Kapiti Coast, approximately 40 miles North of Wellington. This is the course where USA Open winner Michael Campbell honed his skills. Designed by former Australian Open champion Alex Russell in 1943, it is ranked one of the top three courses in the country and continues to challenge players. Not quite flush to the shore, the fresh sea breeze can present all the tests of a links course making it an exciting and technically challenging game.
For those who like a healthy dose of scenery with their round, you need look no further than Cape Kidnappers. This course has a distinctly rugged feel which compliments the sweeping landscape that surrounds it. Architect Tom Doak who designed the course has a healthy dislike of water and trees as hazards and has shaped this course around the landscape with plenty of greenside bunkering making for dramatic play and breath-taking sights.
Most courses in the country welcome visiting golfers with open arms, including the prestigious Jack Nicholas-designed Kinloch course beside Lake Taupo. We would always recommend contacting the club prior at least one day prior to arrival to ensure that no events are being held, and that there are tee times free for you and your party. It’s also worth noting that not all courses offer club hire.
