Nelson & Abel Tasman

If we had to choose one region of New Zealand to settle down and live in, this would be it! It’s the favourite spot for all our Silver Fern team, not least because its home to The Abel Tasman National Park – in our opinion, one of the most breathtakingly beautiful national parks in New Zealand.

Where is Nelson?

Known as the Sunshine City of New Zealand because of its record number of sunshine hours, Nelson is situated at the top North West of the South Island and is popular for its arty vibe and friendly atmosphere.

Explore the Nelson Tasman Region

Within easy driving distances of the area are three diverse National Parks: Kahurangi, Nelson Lakes, and Abel Tasman, as well as Golden Bay, all offering something different – from golden beaches and secret coves, to native forests and majestic mountain ranges.

Walkers will not want to leave without hiking at least a section of the Abel Tasman Coastal Path, or the Heaphy Track (both included in New Zealand’s 9 ‘Great Walks’), though the expansive coast line offers plenty of sailing, fishing, swimming and boating options too.

In Nelson itself, and without even needing to get into the car there’s a picturesque, gentle stroll along the Centre Of New Zealand Walkway that follows the banks of the Matai River from the town.

The city also has a number of excellent art and craft galleries, and actively promotes its many artisan and cultural experiences with a wide range of festivals.  The weekly Saturday farmers market is not to be missed. For over 30 years it’s been the place to go for regional goods and fresh, seasonal and organic produce along with handcrafted items from some of Nelson’s most accomplished craftspeople and artisans.

So what’s so special about Abel Tasman?

The only coastal national park in New Zealand, Abel Tasman National Park offers a magnificent coastline, miles of golden sandy beaches, and lagoons and verdant native bush.

Abel Tasman attractions include sailing, cruising or kayaking crystal clear, turquoise waters around secluded bays, stopping off for a swim as you go –or walking the Abel Tasman Coastal track, through native bush, over limestone cliffs and along long sandy beaches.

It may be the smallest of New Zealand’s National parks but there is so much to do, whether you enjoy relaxing on a beach or adventuring! Abel Tasman holidays are a truly amazing experience.
