Wellington Experiences

Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand, as well as its cultural heart and the centre of New Zealand’s film industry (known as Wellywood). The city is almost completely surrounded by the ocean and the bay. Aside from a little wind (it’s not called “Windy Welly” for nothing), Wellington is frequently named New Zealand’s favourite tourist destination. Let’s find out why…

Enjoy Panoramic Views When You Ride the Wellington Cable Car

You could do a lot worse than to begin your Wellington wanderings with a trip on the legendary red Cable Car. Leaving from Lambton Quay in the city centre, the cable car carries you up through parkland, past the University and on to some glorious views across the city. There’s a museum at the top, and a lovely walk through beautiful botanical gardens takes you back down if you’d prefer not to take the cable car. It’s a great way to get a glimpse of some of what Wellington has to offer and a lovely experience in itself.

Learn About New Zealand’s History and Culture at Te Papa

Wellington is also home to Te Papa, New Zealand’s national museum. Te Papa is one of the reasons for the city’s huge popularity amongst tourists and is consistently one of our customers’ favourite things to do in Wellington. This place is enormous, and will take you through the art, culture, science, geology and natural history of the country with its excellent interactive displays and exhibits. And did we mention it’s free to get in? Save those NZ$s for a delicious lunch in the café.

Go Behind the Scenes with the Weta Cave Tour

Very different, but just as fascinating is the Weta Caves Tour, which is a working film studio that has been instrumental in some of the biggest films cinema has seen, from Indiana Jones to Avatar, and Mad Max to Lord of the Rings. Tours of Weta Workshop are led by employees who have so much knowledge and passion for their work that you’ll be an enthusiast when you come out, if you weren’t when you went in. It’s a real peak behind the scenes of Hollywood. Or should that be Wellywood?

Get Up Close and Personal with Nature at Zealandia

Just ten minutes from the heart of Wellington is Zealandia – a wildlife conservation project that aims to safeguard some of New Zealand’s unique animal and plant life. Of all the things to do in a capital city, here’s a chance to touch base with nature again. With tours day and night (we recommend the night time torchlight tour!) and activities for all ages, drop in for a visit with some of the country’s oldest – and most unusual – inhabitants.

We hope we’ve given you a flavour of the experiences Wellington has to offer, but as with all capital cities, there’s so much more to tell you about! If you’re thinking of visiting, why not drop us a line and let us use our knowledge of the place to help you create the perfect Wellington getaway?
