Auckland Experiences

It’s New Zealand’s largest city, so it comes as no surprise that there is a wealth of things to do in Auckland. Here, we run through some of our favourite experiences to be had in Auckland, to help you plan your perfect holiday.

Things to Do in Auckland

Auckland makes the most of a great waterfront location with a wide range of restaurants, galleries and shops in the harbour area and parks, gardens, and walking trails along the shoreline.  Ascend Auckland Sky Tower for superb views of the city, or take a cruise out to one of the beautiful islands of the Hauraki Maritime Gulf.

The nearest of these islands is Rangitoto. It has a fascinating history and is the youngest volcano in the Auckland Volcanic Reserve. It boasts some truly spectacular walking tracks, of which our favourite is the Rangitoto Island Summit Walk. From the summit, you can enjoy breath-taking 360-degree views across the Hauraki Gulf, across the rugged horizons of the Waitakere Ranges to the west, and the Hunua Ranges to the east.

For those looking for a more relaxed approach to exploring Auckland’s surrounding waters, we would recommend a trip to one of the most popular gulf islands; is Waiheke Island. With sandy beaches and a growing number of wineries, it’s proximity to the city and laid back vibe are seeing it becoming a growing commuter suburb of Auckland, as well as an enjoyable day trip for visitors.

If you asked us what our favourite island was, we’d have to say the wildlife sanctuary island of Tiritiri Matangi. An absolute must-see on a visit to Auckland for nature lovers. Once stripped almost completely of all native bush, volunteers have since re-planted upwards of 250,000 trees and have re-introduced many endangered bird and reptile species who now call the island home. During a trip to Tiritiri Matangi, you’ll have the chance to meet some of the rarest New Zealand birds including the Takahe and Tuatara.
