New Zealand & The Cook Islands
These 15 tiny islands are widely scattered in the South Pacific between Fiji and French Polynesia. If you are looking to round off your New Zealand tour with a Robinson Crusoe adventure we warmly recommend the Cook Islands.
The beaches are impossibly beautiful. Your photos won’t need any filters to make family back home green with envy. And as for romantic, let’s just say there is nowhere better to mark an anniversary.
The Cook Islands are two international datelines from New Zealand so that you appear to ‘gain’ a day in mid-air, but the flight time from Auckland to Rarotonga is only a little over four hours and once you’ve landed you won’t care what day of the week it is!
Rarotonga’s ancient volcanic peaks are clothed in lush greenery while the 32 kilometre coastline is fringed with beaches, each more lovely than the last. Activities are low-key: hire a bike, go snorkelling, eat the freshest seafood in the night market.
In contrast, Aitutaki is a low-lying coral atoll within a sheltered lagoon which forms possibly the world’s largest natural swimming pool. Kick off your shoes, take off your watch and simply relax.
Tourism is tightly controlled in the Cook Islands with no international hotel names, and no building higher than the tallest coconut tree. Cook islanders offer a sincere welcome to travellers who will delight in one of the most unspoiled places on this earth.
