Located on the edge of Whakapapa village right in the heart of Tongariro National Park Skotel is a great base to explore from. The trailhead for the Taranaki Falls and Tama Lakes walks is just to the right of the building, and the main National Park Visitor Centre is a short 5 minute walk down the road.

Also nearby is one of the country’s most popular day hikes, The Tongariro Alpine Crossing.
