Tongariro Experiences

Located in the heart of the North Island, Tongariro was New Zealand’s first National Park, and only the sixth to be established in the world! Its significant cultural and natural features (including volcanic mountains and sacred Maori sites) have seen the area also designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Things to do in Tongariro, New Zealand

The Tongariro region of New Zealand is well worth a few days’ of your time. With everything from adventure sports to fishing and epic walks to helicopter rides; there’s something for everyone.

Hook the Catch of the Day at the Great Lake Taupo

Just a few kilometres North East of Tongariro National Park is the Great Lake Taupo. And at a size of 240 square miles, it’s not just “Great”; it’s a veritable inland sea! The lake was formed when the peak of Taupo Volcano collapsed in on itself, but while the volcano’s heyday has long since past, Lake Taupo is just hitting its stride. A hot ticket for all kinds of fresh water fishing, you’ll find crayfish, whitebait, and trout a-plenty with a stack of different fishing tours and opportunities available for the novice or more experienced customer. And with cycling tours, jet boats, even helicopter rides at your fingertips; Lake Taupo makes a wonderful watery day out.

Skydive Over Lake Taupo

Our next top Tongariro experience is also based at Lake Taupo, but begins 15,000 feet above it. From a light aircraft. With an instructor strapped to your back. Yes, that’s right – it’s a Lake Taupo’s famous Tandem Skydive! We know we’re only talking to a certain sub-section of our readers here, and if you’re smiling right now – it’s you. The reason we’re recommending this particular skydive though, aside from the high-octane, adrenaline rush, ‘best experience of my life’ type stuff, is that this one includes incredible views over the mighty Lake Taupo and the massive volcanic range that borders it.

Walk the Tongariro Alpine Crossing

Ok, let’s bring things back down to earth for our final recommendation of things to do in Tongariro, as we talk to you about the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Widely described as the “finest one day walk in New Zealand”, there are few other walks in the world that offer a better experience of volcanic tundra. With emerald lakes, hot springs, lava flows and unbelievable views, the Alpine Crossing is one of the best things to do in Tongariro. However, the walk can be quite steep at times, so a level of fitness is required, and we always recommend checking weather conditions and transport options at the visitor centre before you set off.

We’re sure you’re really going to enjoy Tongariro, and there’s so much to be experienced in this area that we’d love to help you make the most of your trip. Drop us a line or give us a ring if you’d like to find out more from people who’ve been there.
