The Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre

The Hillary Centre is located within the Hermitage hotel complex and showcases the  achievements of one of the worlds most celebrated explorers and the scenery of the Aoraki/Mount Cook region.

There are 2D, 3D and Digital Planetarium presentations, all shown within the Centre’s custom designed theatre. It’s something of pot luck as to which presentation will be showing when you are there. However, if it is a rainy day with poor views of Mt Cook, taking in one of the movies is a good option – otherwise, get out on the trail and enjoy short walks on the Hooker Valley Trail, knowing you are stepping in Sir Edmund Hillary’s footsteps on the approach to New Zealand’s highest Mountain.

What our travellers enjoyed about the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre…

  • Well laid out exhibition of early Hillary photographs, of both his climbing days in New Zealand and famous conquest of Everest
  • Excellent 3D film of the Mt Cook Mountain panorama
