Hawkes Bay Experiences

If you didn’t visit Napier while in the area, you’d be missing out on one of the best experiences in Hawkes Bay. Napier is a town like no other and the story has a tragic beginning. In 1931 an earthquake all but levelled the city leading to a near complete re-build. The re-build took inspiration from the architectural trends of the time, and the result is one of the best-preserved art deco towns in the world. You can see the sights with a first class walking tour, from a 1930s vintage car, or just by having a wonder around and taking in the beauty of the colours, arches and geometry of this living tribute to the 1930s.

Step Back in Time at Cape Kidnappers

One of the best things to do in Hawkes Bay for nature lovers is to head over to Cape Kidnappers. This mysteriously named patch of coastline is home to some wonderful geological structures, fossils galore and the world’s largest land-based colony of gannets! Guided tours get you up close and personal to these beautiful large sea birds with their dark eyes and golden crowns, and the experience is as thrilling and fascinating as it is heart-warming. A truly unusual and unforgettable experience!

Sip the Delicious Wines on the Classic New Zealand Wine Trail

Hawkes Bay is the second oldest and largest wine region in New Zealand; it’s awash with vineyards and wonderful wines and is the first stop on the classic New Zealand Wine Trail. To get the most from your time here (and we are referring in no small part to the wine itself!) we’d recommend one of the many tours available in the area. Our favourite is Great Escape Wine tours with the lovely Greg who will guide you through the beautiful countryside, inform you, and fill you full of world-class wine and food as you visit the vineyards, famous for their Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
