Discover the magic of the Costa Verde, far removed from the bustling beaches and tourist areas of the South... this is 'real' Spain, steeped in history, unspoilt and breathtakingly beautiful, where the snow-capped peaks of the Picos de Europa give way to verdant foothills and lush farmland before reaching some of the most magnificent, unspoilt beaches in Europe.

Our journey combines travel by train and minibus, offering a unique exploration of the coast and countryside of this undiscovered region. Enjoy the village of Santillana del Mar, little changed since mediaeval times; elegant San Vincente de la Barquera with its wonderful seafood restaurants and Santander, capital of Cantabria... and follow parts of the ancient route trodden by pilgrims as they made their way to Santiago de Compostela.

Itinerary Highlights

Santillana del Mar (1 night)

  • Explore Santillana's mediaeval streets and 17th century houses
  • See the remarkable Collegiate Church, an extraordinary example of Romanesque art

 San Vicente de la Barquera (2 nights)

  • Fabulous views of the Atlantic Ocean on a route through the citrus groves of Novales
  • Visit the museum at the Palace of King Alfonso
  • View Gaudi architecture and enjoy fresh seafood at Comillas
  • Explore San Vicente's historical streets or unspoilt beaches
  • Optional canoe trip along the River Deva

 Porrua (1 night)

  • Take the train from Cantabria to Unquera
  • Cycle across the River Deva and pass through Colombres
  • Stay at charming Porrua, famous for its delicious cheeses

Asturias (1 night)

  • Discover Asturias with its deep mountain valleys, clear rivers and leafy chestnut woods
  • Cycle the coastline between Llanes and Ribadesella - the beaches are barely accessible by car
  • Take a guided walk through the scenic Carres Gorge
  • See the famous 20 000 year old cave paintings of Tito Bustillo at Ribadesella

 

Hotel Information

We have chosen smaller family run hotels, often a little off the beaten track. Stay close to the centre of Sant Illana in a traditional local style hotel and enjoy the views acros the harbour from our next hotel perched high on a rocky promontory just outside San Vincente near Porrua. We've chosen accommodation with pleasant mountain views. We have selected a small traditional hotel near Somo close to the fine beaches and with easy access across the bay to Santander.
