Switzerland
Switzerland  by Andy Angst,  Silver Fern Holidays – Regional Expert

A combination of the ‘colossal and the well-ordered’ is how Goethe described Switzerland in the nineteenth century and the passage of time has not changed this very apt description of a country blessed with some of the best alpine scenery in the world and a society renowned for its efficiency and tidiness. This should not imply a sterile atmosphere since the Swiss are wonderful hosts and proffer a welcome to all visitors who take the time to leave the general tourist routes to visit smaller communities in the mountains or the rural villages of the valleys. The countryside is visually stunning and whether your group travels by coach, bicycle or on foot you can be sure of an engagement with natural surroundings unlikely to be matched in any other European region.

You can visit Switzerland at any time of the year but as with most group departures you’ll find the shoulder seasons of April / May and September / October better in terms of lower pricing and avoiding the crowds – although ‘crowd’ is a relative term here, with such a small population living in the main Alpine districts.
Our favoured regions of Switzerland are primarily to be found in the South West of the country: the ‘Bernese Oberland’, ideal for exploring the high mountains of the Aare Valley, visiting the lakeside towns of Thun and Interlaken and taking the railway from Kleine Scheidegg to the Jungfraujoch, Europe’s highest station. The small towns of Meiringen, Wengen and Wildersill make excellent bases for a group itinerary. Likewise, the adjacent Goms Valley provides access to the Valais region, site of Europe’s longest glacier, the Aletsch Glacier, now a World Heritage site. You can travel the valley by train, small coach or bicycle along one of the wonderful cycle paths that connect the traditional French and German speaking villages along the valley floor.
The Swiss Jura offers a gentler landscape of rolling meadows, rambling stone fences and superb lookout summits to view Lakes Geneva and Neuchatel.
These regions of Switzerland can be accessed through the main airport gateways of Geneva or Zurich, with excellent onward connections by train or coach to your destination hotel.
We can offer excellent walking, cycling or ski-ing packages tailored to your group requirements and / or sightseeing programmes to some of the highlights of each region.
